Rethinking Data Sources in Analytics: Are you Missing Opportunities for More Insight?

People Analytics is about understanding the employee experience. Unfortunately, most of the data captured in our traditional HR systems are fairly limited in their utility due to an employee's limited interaction with them.

Significant life events recorded in these systems like terminations, hires, promotions, transfers, etc. are outcomes that happen to an individual at timescales of years, so predictions for these outcomes get increasingly more variable as you shorten those time horizons.

As such, it's important to find, create, and use datasets that produce more data about an employee's daily work experience if our goal is to optimize their experience. We will look at how Salesforce is using service tickets, open text around goals and feedback, real estate data, etc. to better understand the employee's experience.

Biography

Ernest Ng is Senior Director of Employee Success (ES) at Salesforce. Ernest leads the global ES Strategy and People Analytics team. The team focuses on HR applications of predictive analytics and machine learning, HR strategy, program evaluation, employee surveys, and organizational transformation. This work is all in effort to drive greater listening, understanding, and empowerment of employees to help fuel the company’s incredible growth and innovation.

Ernest has more 10 years of experience in applied research, non-profit consulting, and human resources, including building workforce analytics teams at The Walt Disney Company and Salesforce. Ernest holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychobiology from UCLA and a PhD in Applied Developmental Psychology from Claremont Graduate University. At Claremont Graduate University, under the guidance of Dr Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, one of the leading researchers in positive psychology, his research focused on the interaction between culture, creativity/innovation, leadership, and intrinsic motivation.
